Classic Banana bread loaf with no refined sugar

A healthy and moist Banana bread recipe made with simple natural ingredients like honey. As there is no refined sugar added, this banana bread is perfectly suitable for breakfast or an after-school snack.

Is this a Banana loaf cake or bread?

If you want me to answer honestly, I prefer to call this Banana cake rather than bread. Why so??… Obviously, because we use all the cake ingredients instead of bread items right from raising agents and bake like a cake!!

But yes! This is the traditional banana bread recipe with minor variations all over the world for generations. Hence let us settle with the banana bread name and move on to other topics to discuss.

Is banana bread healthy for you?

  • No!! The answer is no if you like to use the ingredients like in a bakery and prefer to have the sweetest banana bread with loads of sugar and toppings.
  • Yes!!! The answer is of course yes if you use healthy homely alternatives and prefer to have only natural mild banana bread.
  • In this recipe, I used unbleached flour(wheat flour) instead of all-purpose flour. And I use raw natural honey for sweetness along with ripe bananas.
  • If you are planning on a weight loss diet then this is not suitable as it is still high in carbs and calories. But it is a super addictive breakfast otherwise with a cup of coffee and an irresistible snack!

Let us talk about traditional ingredients and their alternatives.

Banana bread ingredients and healthy alternatives:

Flour – Healthy option is whole wheat flour or unbleached wheat flour. You can use half and half multigrain flour and wheat flour.

Bananas – Hey there are no alternatives for this one…lol!!!..after all we are talking bread with bananas. The only point to note here is they should be well ripened to get the natural sweetness and taste. Those with dark dots and ugly pits on the skin are the perfect ones. If you don’t have fully ripen bananas but still have to make them, go for 30 seconds microwaving before mashing.

Fats – I used my flavorless sunflower oil with melted butter and Greek yogurt. Use plain yogurt or non-sour Indian curd for a good result.

Sugar – No refined sugar or brown sugar. Only raw honey and natural banana sweetness.

Can this banana bread recipe be suitable for specific diet plans?

Gluten free – Replace wheat flour with your gluten-free baking flour available in the market. Make sure your gluten-free flour is good for baking with xantham gum( or it’s alternate to help to rise). Also, use gluten-free baking powder half a tsp extra from the mentioned quantity. I have never tried banana bread with gluten-free flour and guess it is supposedly denser than the regular one.

Dairy-free – Avoid butter and yogurt. Use oil as complete fat. Just replace the quantities mentioned.

Vegan – Follow the above step. Next for each egg replace with 1tbsp of soaked flax seeds paste. To make it soak flax seeds in hot water for 30mins and blend them nicely.

Toppings to use:

Interesting add ons maybe dark choco chips and chopped nuts.

Post baking you can sprinkle powder sugar or pour choco syrup to make it a banana loaf cake though I would not recommend both.

    • Keep aside.
    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175C).
    • Prep 8*4" bread loaf pan. You can simply grease the pan with oil or line it with parchment paper.

    Recipe:

      Wet ingredients for banana bread:

      • Take a quarter cup of butter in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it for a few seconds.
      • Add this liquid butter to a mixing bowl. Measure 1/3 cup of oil, 1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt and add into the butter bowl.
      • Add two eggs, one at a time and mix well with a whisk.
      • Finally, add 1/4 cup(around 4tbsp) of raw honey and a tsp of vanilla extract. Combine well and keep aside.

      Dry ingredients:

      • In another bowl, keep a metal mesh and add 1.5 cups of flour.
      • Add 1tsp of baking powder, 1/2tsp of baking soda and 4tsp of salt.
      • Sift the flour with salts.

      Bake Banana bread:

      • Fill the batter into the loaf pan and bake at 350F.
      • Bake for 40 to 50 mins until a toothpick comes out clean. The time varies based on the size of your pan.
      • The crust opens up after around 30mins and it is perfectly fine and desired.
      • Sometimes you see banana chunks on the open crust. That doesn't mean the bread is undercooked in any way. Baking 40 mins will be more than enough for this size loaf. Moreover, the banana cake continues to cook after removed from the oven. Remove the bread as soon as it comes out of the oven and transfer it to the cooling rack.
      • Let the bread cool down completely before slicing. If you wish to have it warm feel free to enjoy it after ten minutes.

      Notes

      Tips:
      1) This bread can not have perfect slices as I baked with real banana chunks. Mash bananas to a puree if you like perfect slicing bread texture.
      2) Replace honey with your preferred sweetener. But be cautious about the quantity you add as ripe bananas are naturally sweet themselves. Maple syrup, Apple sauce, brown sugar are some good choices.
