Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 10 slices wheat bread
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp chopped ginger
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 big onion
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp chilli powder
  • ½ lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves

Instructions

Preparation:

  • Take ten slices of whole wheat /multigrain /white bread and cut into small pieces.
  • You can cut the edges of the bread slices if you wish. I usually prefer to keep the edges unless it is too browned.
  • Chop onions, tomato, green chillies, and ginger. Keep aside.

Recipe:

  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard and cumin seeds.
  • Let the mustard splutter and add finely chopped ginger.
  • Also, add chopped green chillies and fry them for a minute.
  • Now add onions and curry leaves.
  • Saute onions well for few minutes until they become transparent.
  • Add tomato pieces and salt required for the upma.
  • Salt at this stage helps to cook the tomatoes faster. Saute until they become soft.
  • Now add chilli powder and mix.
  • Add bread pieces and mix well with the masala.
  • Mix well in such a way that the masala powders stick well with the bread. Do this in low heat.
  • You can sprinkle a tbsp of water to make sure the masalas stick to the bread pieces. But be careful not to add too much water as the bread pieces may become sticky.
  • Finally, add a dash of lemon juice and coriander leaves.
  • Give a quick mix and switch off.
  • Serve the Bread upma hot with a masala chai beside.

Notes

Tips: 1) Always use fresh as well as firm bread for making this upma. Too soft bread slices are not a good choice. 2) Moreover, you can add interesting top ups like carrot pieces, cashews, etc according to your preference. 3) Finally, I would like to mention that do not use sweet bread for this recipe.
