Cabbage kootu | Vegetable kootu recipes
Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 2 cups cabbage (shredded)
- 1 cup gram dal (cooked)
- 2 tbsp oil
- ¾ tsp mustard seeds
- ½ tsp cumin seeds
- 1 onion
- 3 green chillies
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- ¼ tsp asafoetida
- 4 garlic pods
- 1 to mato
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp sambar powder
- Water to cook
- 1 tsp salt (as per taste)
- 4 tbsp coconut (grated or paste)
- Coriander leaves
Instructions
Preparation:
- Rinse and soak gram dal for 30 minutes. pressure cook with enough water for 3 to 4 whistles, slightly mash and keep aside.
- Shred or grate cabbage.
- Cut onion, tomato and peel garlic. Keep aside.
- Grate coconut finely or grind into a paste.
Recipe for cabbage kootu:
- Heat oil in a cooking pan, season with mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
- Let them splutter and add chopped onions.
- Add green chillies, curry leaves and garlic pods.
- Also, add some asafoetida and saute well for few minutes.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
- Now add turmeric powder and sambar powder.
- Put cabbage and mix well.
- Pour some water and cook for five minutes.
- Cook cabbage until soft and add cooked dal. Mix well and let the kootu cook for few minutes.
- Add required salt for the curry and mix well.
- Finally, add ground coconut, mix well and switch off.
- You can garnish with coriander leaves.
- Serve with hot rice and mango pickle. Tastes good as a side for rotis and chapati.

Tips:
1) Firstly, if you are concerned about green chillies, use sambar powder.
2) Furthermore, instead of gram dal, you can use toor dal also.
3) Finally, snake gourd also can be prepared in the same way.
