Aloo matar salad is a simple boiled potato, peas Chaat style salad without pooris and special chutneys.
This is one of the simple boiled Potato salads which I make in chat style but without gravy or chutney. Hence I would say this recipe is more of a salad than a Chaat.
The Potato peas Chaat-style salad I gave here is the basic idea for a kid’s snack box. You can always add extra additions like green chutney, tangy/sweet chutneys, or curd with fried Chaat pooris to make a perfect Chaat.
Moreover, this same boiled aloo salad recipe can be converted into the popular aloo matar chat by adding thin peas masala gravy and papads or broken samosas.

Aloo matar salad | Potato peas Chaat style salad
Equipment
- Pressure cooker
- Mixing bowl
Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 6 baby potatoes or 2 large potatoes
- 1 cup white peas cook separately
- ½ cup chopped onion
- 1 small tomato
- 1 carrot medium size
- ¾ tsp Chaat masala
- ¼ tsp chilli powder
- ¼ tsp Amchoor masala
- ¾ tsp salt as needed
- ½ lemon
- Coriander leaves optional
- ½ cup bhujia or mixture
Instructions
Preparation:
- Boil potatoes in a pressure cooker or open pot Al-dente. Do not cook until mush.
- I used baby potatoes and cooked for two whistles in a small pressure pan. For normal potatoes, one whistle may be enough based on your cooker type.
- Remove the peel and keep ready.
- Also, cook soaked dry white peas. I cooked the peas along with potatoes by keeping soaked matar(peas) in an inner vessel inside the cooker.
- Chop onion, tomato, coriander leaves and grate the carrot.
Recipe:
- In a mixing bowl, take boiled potatoes and mash them slightly.
- Add boiled white peas. I used dried white matar, cooked after soaking them for four hours.
- Put chopped onion, tomato and grated carrot.
- Add Chaat masala powder, some chilli powder, amchoor powder and salt.
- Few fresh lemon drops and gram mixture or bhujia(ompodi) just before serving. I like to use a spicy mixture instead of bhujia for the crunchy peanuts in the besan mixture.
- Mix everything together and serve as a salad or Chaat with any kind of tangy or sweet chutney.
- You can also add chopped coriander leaves.

Notes
1) If you want to serve this as a proper chaat, you can top it with any sweet-sour chutney or peas/potato gravy.
2) As an alternative to dried white peas, you can use green peas also.
