Dal recipe is the simplest vegetarian side dish, commonly prepared with toor dal/toor lentil and seasoned with basic spices. This dal is a very common dish in India, served for plain steamed rice with ghee and roti items and goes well with dosa too.

Dal can be prepared with many varieties of lentils, today I showed you the basic one with toor dal, seasoned in south style. This dal recipe can be customized based on our preferences in multiple methods. In North, for the same preparation, seasoning will be different without mustard, and curry leaves.

Ingredients
  

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup toor lentil
  • 6 shallots/small onions or 1 big onion
  • 3 garlic pods
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp sambhar powder
  • ½ tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp jeera seeds
  • ¼ tsp hing
  • 2 red chillies
  • 1 tsp crystal salt or as required
  • Few coriander leaves

Instructions
 

Preparation:

  • Soak toor lentil for 30 mins. Cook , mash it soft in a pressure cooker.

Recipe:

  • Heat 2 tsp of oil and a tsp of ghee.
  • Add mustard and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  • Add chopped onions, crushed garlic pods, and curry leaves.
  • Put ¼ tsp of hing or asafoetida.
  • Split two red chillies, add and saute with onions.
  • Add a tsp of sambhar powder and mix.
  • Mash the softly cooked lentil and add into the kadai.
  • Add a tsp of crystal salt.
  • Close with lid for the dal to cook with spices for 3-5 minutes.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve with hot rice and ghee.

Notes

Tips/notes: 1) You can add tomatoes also after garlic in this dal if you like. 2) Don’t avoid hing, because it gives nice aroma and aid good digestion with lentils preparation. 3) You can season fully with ghee for even better taste. 4) This is easily digestible and mild recipe hence apt for babies and elders.

Tips/notes:
