Kara paruppu | Spicy dal recipe

Kara paruppu is the South Indian style of dal recipe, made with toor dal and basic spices and served as an accompaniment for hot rice, chapati, roti and phulkas. This Kara paruppu goes well with dosa also.

Above all, this spicy dal is so easy to prepare and pack. We can make it in just 15mins provided dal is pressure-cooked already. Actually, I have already posted this dal recipe with mild alterations long back in my blog. But this one is with better pictures & video and used onions.

The best serving suggestions would be Kara paruppu and hot rice with Vazhakkai varuval or Potato fry,

Baby potato roast,

Arbi roast, mango pickle and papad.

Tips:

1) Firstly, toor dal is the best choice for making this Kara paruppu. But you can follow the same recipe for making moong dal Kara paruppu.

2) Next, if you have shallots please use them instead of big onion as small onions are better in taste.

3) Finally, do not avoid asafoetida as it is one of the key ingredients in this Kara paruppu. Also, I recommend not skipping garlic.

4) Last but not least, you can adjust the spice level by increasing or decreasing red chilli and sambar powder.
