Potato podimas | Urulaikilangu podimas recipe
Potato podimas or Urulaikilangu podimas (in Tamil) is a popular side dish prepared from boiled potatoes sauteed with onion and green chillies.
This potato podimas is more or less similar to potato masala, except the addition of the besan flour, which is mandatory for potato masala. This delicious Urulaikilangu podimas goes very well with all tamarind based gravies like Vendhaya kuzhambu, karuvepilai kuzhambu etc.
Since my daughter is a potato lover I make potatoes in multiple methods and used to try different recipes. This is one quick recipe, which you can make in just 15mins using boiled potatoes.

Potato podimas | Urulaikilangu podimas recipe
Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 3 big potatoes
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp jeera seeds
- 1 tbsp gram dal
- 1 tsp urad dal
- ½ tsp chopped ginger
- 1 big onion
- 3 green chillies
- Few curry leaves
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp chilli powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp lemon juice optional
Instructions
Preparation:
- Boil potatoes with enough water until soft. If you are doing pressure cook, give 2 whistles.
- Peel the skin and mash the potatoes. Keep aside.
- Chop onions, green chillies, and ginger.
Recipe to make potato podimas (Urulaikilangu podimas):
- Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard and jeera seeds.
- Let them splutter and add gram dal and urad dal. Fry them until golden color.
- Add finely chopped ginger and mix well.
- Put chopped green chillies.
- Now add chopped onions and curry leaves.
- Sauté nicely until it turns into transparent color.
- Add the required salt, turmeric powder, and chilli powder.
- Mash boiled potatoes well and add.
- Mix the potatoes nicely with the masala in low flame for 5 mins.
- Finally, add a few drops of lemon juice and mix quickly.
- Switch off the podimas and serve with rice, roti or dosa.

Tips:
- You can skip lemon juice as it is optional to give some tangy touch.
- Instead of lemon juice, you can use one chopped tomato while sautéing onions before adding potatoes.
- Do not avoid ginger as it helps to avoid gas trouble after eating potatoes.
