Arisi paruppu sadam | How to make paruppu sadam recipe
Arisi paruppu sadam is an instant variety rice recipe prepared by pressure cooking toor dal and rice along with basic spices. Even beginners can make this quick one-pot rice within 20 minutes.
This arisi paruppu sadam or Dal variety rice is simple, yet delicious and healthy kids friendly lunch box item. Serve this with any vegetable stirfry/poriyal or simply with plain curd and pickle. Use toor dal to make this rice for better taste though moong dal also can be used.
While preparing sambhar sadam or bisibelabath, the rice is cooked mushy with dal and mashed. But here in paruppu sadam recipe, rice is cooked as separate grains, hence this is an excellent variety rice item.

Arisi paruppu sadam | How to make paruppu sadam recipe
Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice
- ¼ cup toor dal
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard
- ½ tsp jeera/cumin
- ¼ tsp asafoetida/hing
- 8 small onions or 1 big onion
- 2 green chillies
- Few curry leaves
- ½ tsp ginger garlic paste (mash 1 inch ginger+5 garlic pods)
- 1 tomato
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp sambhar powder
- 1 tsp crystal salt
- 2 ½ cups water
Instructions
Preparation:
- Rinse and soak rice, dal together for 30 minutes.
- Peel and chop onions.
Recipe to prepare Arisi paruppu sadam:
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add mustard, jeera seeds, and hing.
- When mustard starts spluttering, add chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves.
- Saute onion to a transparent color, add ginger garlic paste and saute to remove raw flavor.
- Now add chopped tomatoes, cook until soft.
- Add turmeric powder and sambhar powder, cook with masala.
- Pour 2.5 cups of water. For 1 cup rice and ¼ cup toordal, you may need 2 to 2.5 cups of water depending upon the rice variety you use.
- You can use the same rice: water measure plus half cup extra water for cooking the dal. So altogether it will be around 2 to 2.5 cups needed.
- Let the water boil with the masala. Add required salt.
- When water starts boiling add washed, soaked and drained rice. Mix well.
- Close cooker lid and cook for 3 to 4 whistles, like you usually cook plain rice.
- Switch off and let the steam release on it’s own.
- Open lid, garnish with coriander leaves and a tsp of ghee for an excellent aroma.
- Serve with papad or pickle and curd.

Tips/notes:
- Arisi paruppu sadam is a healthy easily digestible dish suitable for kids and elders. If you are serving for kids you can season with ghee instead of oil.
- Do not avoid using jeera and hing.
